While moving can be a very exciting venture, there are also plenty of small details that you will need to pay attention to and plan for. Certain tasks can be overlooked or forgotten about when you are thinking about packing and unpacking. Tasks such as transferring your utility bills, and remember to change your mailing address when you move.
Tasks that you should keep in mind if you are preparing for a residential move:
- Changing your mailing address
- Canceling and transferring utility bills such as electricity, cable, and internet service
- Notifying your doctors, children’s schools, and other professionals if you are moving long distance
- Separating important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and wedding certificates from the rest of your belongings to be packed (you should keep these documents on you throughout the moving process, not put them on a truck)
- Sorting other important or valuable belongings such as fine jewelry, furs, and watches (don’t but anything small and valuable on your moving truck, in case of an accident or damage)

- Changing your mailing address

If you forget to do this, things can get very complicated very quickly: bills, paychecks, and other important documents could get lost in the mail. - During the period of time that you are having mail forwarded, it is up to you to update different companies/service providers (like credit card companies, family/friends, schools, etc.) of your new address so that they will begin sending physical mail correspondence to the correct place.
- After your mail forwarding service ends, you will no longer be able to retrieve mail that is still sent to the old address, unless you still have access to that residence or P.O. Box.
- Fees associated with updating your address and/or forwarding your mail are usually very minimal, and more than worth the nominal amount to ensure you receive mail in a timely manner.
- Be sure to also alert the appropriate federal agencies (like the IRS) of your new or upcoming address, as well as changing the address on your vehicle registration. Most of these changes can be made online, but some entities may require visits in person, as well as supporting documentation to accompany the request.
- Your driver’s license also needs to display a current address. Either go to your local DMV’s website or visit a physical location in order to get this information updated as well.
